Missionary Supply Lines was founded out of concern for the financial needs of a missionary friend in South America. In response, Herb Knight was inspired to establish a not-for-profit organization in Kingsburg to help meet those needs.
In 1946, a group of high school students came together to provide the $40 monthly support needed for that missionary. Soon after, another request arrived—this time for $175 per month to support missionaries in France—and the same group of students faithfully met that need as well.
Motivated by these experiences, Herb sought ways to raise additional funds to support more missionaries and mission organizations. This led to the formal establishment of Missionary Supply Lines (MSL), which has continued its mission to this day and eventually included support for Young Life in Kingsburg.
The original fundraising plan involved donors purchasing a heifer; when her calves were a year old, they would be sold, and the profits donated to missions through MSL. This creative approach provided a sustainable, ongoing source of financial support. However, when the beef market declined, MSL shifted its focus to real estate investments—though this proved to have a slower return.
Today, MSL continues to receive and distribute financial contributions in support of missions around the world. The organization also holds the title for the Young Life Gym and remains a committed supporter of Kingsburg Young Life.
Young Life, founded in 1941, shares the good news of Jesus Christ with adolescents in a way that is both respectful of who they are and hopeful for who they can become. YL is a Christian ministry reaching out to middle school, high school, and college-aged students through genuine relationships.
Our approach is simple and relational. We go where kids are, build real friendships, and earn the right to make a positive impact in their lives. We want every young person to know they are loved and valued.
Today, Young Life is active in more than 8,000 communities across the United States and over 100 countries around the world.
Here in Kingsburg, Herb Knight started Young Life in 1953. It continues today reaching out to junior high and high school students with the same spirit and purpose.
